The head of the Tristan da Cunha post office and philatelic bureau has completed a two-week work placement at Tynwald. 

For Mrs Iris Green, who also works in the territory’s tourism industry, her placement, organised by the Office of the Clerk of Tynwald, was the first time she had observed the workings of a parliament. 

She said: ‘It has been most interesting to learn about Tynwald’s legislative and administrative procedures. I have also had the opportunity to work alongside the Information Service and Hansard teams and witness how online access to records streamlines the research process. Our Island Council is, of course, much smaller than Tynwald, but for us to have that ease of access to records would, nevertheless, be of great benefit and this is one of a number of proposals I would hope to put forward on my return.’

‘All islands face many similar problems so it has been extremely valuable to share experiences while on this study visit during which everyone has been very welcome and helpful.‘

Mrs Green, together with her husband Martin who is employed within Tristan da Cunha’s agriculture department, is in the Island on a four-month work placement arranged by the Isle of Man Government as part of its international development programme.
