‘We Are Here’ is here…at the Tynwald Library
25/03/2015
Hand-drawn maps capturing the Island’s rich cultural heritage are to be displayed in the Tynwald Library exhibition space.
‘We Are Here’ features work by local artist artist Alice Quayle who said: ‘I produced the maps to guide people to the places they may not have realised the Isle of Man has to offer. The maps are there to help you navigate hidden gems and historic sites across the Island.’
She explained: 'I quite enjoy uncovering half-hidden or just slightly obscure information and piecing it together to build up a picture. For instance, it took me quite a time just to collect the information on the major Viking sites of the Island. This was partly because those darn Vikings were so busy running around having battles, and war-lording, that it makes the history pretty complex.
'I also sometimes just think: “If I was a visitor fresh off the boat, what would I want to know?” or I’ll be thinking about someone in the UK just flicking through a magazine, so it's a question of simplifying and drawing out the essential elements and presenting it straightforwardly, like the London Underground map does.'
‘Dark Skies’, ‘Viking Island’, ‘Laxey Village’ and ‘Douglas Culture Quarter’ are some of the aspects of Manx life depicted by Ms Quayle in her exhibition.
Prints and postcards will be available at the exhibition starting from £1.
‘We Are Here’ will run from Friday March 27th to Thursday April 23rd, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays) from 9am to 5pm in the Tynwald Library.
Located on the ground floor of the Legislative Buildings in Finch Road the Tynwald Library exhibition space provides schools, youth, community and sporting organisations, as well as private individuals and commercial enterprises, with a secure, easily managed area in which to mount Manx-themed displays. There is no rental charge, only a small commission fee for sales by commercial operators.
