Retirement from Political Office – Laurence Skelly, President of Tynwald

02/04/2026

Laurence Skelly OBE, President of Tynwald, has today announced his intention to retire from political office and that he will not be seeking re-election for the Presidency when his term of office expires on 21 July 2026.

Mr Skelly was elected President of Tynwald in 2021, having previously served for ten years as a Member of the House of Keys with over 7 years as a Minister.  He will continue to discharge the duties of President until July.

In making the announcement, Mr Skelly said:

“After fifteen years in public office, I have taken the decision not to seek re-election and to retire from political life. It has been a very great privilege to serve the people of Rushen and the Isle of Man, both as a Member of the House of Keys and as President of Tynwald.

As a Manxman, to have served as President of Tynwald during these past five years has been the greatest honour.  I remain sincerely grateful to my former constituents and to colleagues across Tynwald for the confidence and support they have shown to me.

I wish also to place on record my appreciation for the many members of staff with whom I have had the privilege of working, whose dedication, talent and passion help benefit our Island daily.

Finally, I express my heartfelt thanks to my wife, Jackie, and to my family for their steadfast support throughout my years in public service.

Tynwald is the Isle of Man’s most ancient institution, and the responsibility of upholding its integrity and traditions is of the greatest importance to our identity and nation. It is my sincere hope that future generations will continue to respect, value and safeguard our unique parliament.”

Following his retirement from political office, Mr Skelly intends to remain active in Island life, including through supporting family businesses and contributing to cultural, heritage and charitable initiatives.

The election of the next President of Tynwald will take place on 21 July 2026, for a term of office extending to 2031.
