The Environment and Infrastructure Policy Review Committee, a Standing Committee of Tynwald, has published its report on the Active Travel Strategy 2018-2021 – which can be accessed here.

Our Island Plan has a long-term vision for the Isle of Man to be a place where cycling and walking become realistic additional transport choices for people of all ages and abilities. Prepared by the Department of Infrastructure, the Active Travel Strategy aimed to provide a framework to encourage people on the Isle of Man to make regular everyday journeys by more active means.

In its report the Committee highlights a number of issues around reporting, data and measurement, funding, communication, the definition of active travel, and the lack of inter-Departmental working – making four recommendations.

Mr. Mercer, the current chair of the committee reflected that:

Government policy already supports the concept of active travel, with statements dedicated to it in the Island Plan and in the Strategic Plan that underpin government planning policies. This report sets out areas for improvement in any future active travel plans and also makes wider recommendations for improvement to strategy development. We hope that our report and its findings will help to inform the new strategy promised in the Department of Infrastructure’s latest departmental plan recently debated in Tynwald.

The report will be debated at the May sitting of Tynwald.
