Scrutiny of education during the emergency period

The sixth Public Accounts Committee public emergency scrutiny session will be at 11.00am on Friday 12th June and will be on the subject of education provision during the emergency period. This session will consider themes including the immediate response to the emergency and planning for, and factors affecting, a return to normal.

Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, the Hon Juan Watterson SHK commented, “We want to ascertain preparedness and progress for full education of all of the Island’s children. It has been a very challenging period, with much uncertainty. The initial response appears to have been extremely positive and the hub schools provided the support needed at that time. We look forward to discussing the move towards re-establishing a full educational provision within the constraints which still exist”.

The Committee would be pleased to receive written submissions from anyone else who wishes to comment on this topic. Submissions should be sent by email to by close of business on Tuesday 9th June 2020.

Members of the Public Accounts Committee, the Hon Juan Watterson SHK, Lawrie Hooper MHK, Rob Callister MHK, Julie Edge MHK, Jane Poole Wilson MLC, and Chris Robertshaw MHK will hear from: Minister for Education Sport and Culture, Hon Alex Allinson MHK, and Chief Officer, Professor Ronald Barr.

The Legislative Buildings remain closed to the public. The Committee, staff and witnesses will all participate remotely in this meeting. The evidence will be able to be heard via the livestream on the Tynwald website here. The recording will also be available after the session under the “Listen Again” section of the website here and a Hansard transcription will be published in due course.
