Financial support schemes to be scrutinised

The third Public Accounts Committee public emergency scrutiny session will be at 11.00 am on Friday 15th May and will be with Treasury on the subject of economic impact and financial support. This session will continue some of the themes discussed in the session with the Department for Enterprise, held today, but will also include salary support schemes.

Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, the Hon Juan Watterson SHK commented, “The economic impact of this pandemic is unprecedented, with the financial impact to Government alone at £100m per month. This gives an opportunity to lift the lid at the economic response, especially around the support schemes Treasury has been operating such as MERA and the Salary Support Scheme”.

The Committee would like to thank those people who contacted them last week, relevant information will be carried over into this week’s session. They would also be pleased to receive written submissions from anyone else who wishes to comment on this topic. Submissions should be sent by email to by close of business on Tuesday 12th May 2020.

Members of the Public Accounts Committee, the Hon Juan Watterson SHK, Julie Edge MHK, Chris Robertshaw MHK and Jane Poole Wilson MLC, will hear from Treasury Minister, Hon Alf Cannan MHK, and Chief Financial Officer, Caldric Randall.

The Legislative Buildings remain closed to the public. The Committee, staff and witnesses will all participate remotely in this meeting. The evidence will be able to be heard via the livestream on the Tynwald website here. The recording will also be available after the session under the “Listen Again” section of the website here and a Hansard transcription will be published in due course.
